In Panama we are right now in our rainy season, therefore it is very common to see
cloudy and rainy days, and maybe I was feeling blue but I thought of decorating a box with
vintage birds on a cloudy day. It is also meant to be a gift for my lovely sister in law. Here it is the result:
I started by painting a rainy and cloudy background using gray, white
and light blue colors combined all together at the same time in the brush on
the lid of the box, and same colors but without the clouds in the rest of the
box. The clouds were painted with a
white base and then gray touches to add light and dark shades.
Next step was using a stencil to paint the branch & leaves where the
main bird would be standing on, I chose brown for the branch and orange shades
for the leaves.
Then I glued the birds to the lid of the box with Mod Podge along with two postage stamps to complement the composition. The box was a new wood box I had purchased some time ago, and therefore it did not required further surface preparation than sanding and one coat of liquid gesso.
I love stripes and so I thought to paint some and give the box a special
look. I chose the orange color to
maintain the same color palette existing in the bird’s feathers and painted uneven edges to create a rustic look.
For a final decorative touch on the outside of the box, I looked in my
vintage stamps collection for some graphics that would work well with the theme
and so I used the “a little birdie told me” stamp in the front of the box as
well as a feather stamp on the left and right side of the box.
For the inside of the box, I went for a simple white background and one
bird on the lid.
I stamped as well in black color, some words related to shipping as “airmail”
and “fragile” to go along with the theme as the postage stamps on the outside
of the box.
To protect the project I applied 4 layers of water-base polyurethane
varnish and viola! The project is finished and looking cute, is it not?.

This is really quite beautiful! I noticed the weather systems around the Atlantic and the Gulf area - so much rain! We've had an extraordinary amount ourselves - today is the first day I've seen clear, blue skies! Love your box - quite inspired - the cloudy sky is perfect! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
