I am a Coca Cola lover, for me it goes awesome with meals, with pop
corn, with a piece of cake, and many other things, but my favorite combination of all times is a can
of coke and a bar of snickers while watching TV, ahhh it’s perfect, is it not?. My choice is always Coca Cola and if for some
reason it is not available, then as second choice I drink any other of the flavors
of Coca Cola Company.
I know few other people who love coca cola like me, and my friend Marcia
is one of them. One day she asked me to
make a box for her inspired in coca cola. I gladly did it and here it is:
A Vintage Coca Cola box decorated with old and retro advertisements.
With a photo editing software I placed the coca cola advertisement
images on top of an old photo template I had, simulating the old Polaroid films
for that vintage/retro look I was searching for.
I also used some old cameras and ephemeras to complement the design.
I decided to paint the background black, so the images would
stand out.
Did you know that the first coca cola sales were at Jacob's Pharmacy in
Atlanta, Georgia, USA on May 8, 1886? It
was initially sold as a patent medicine for five cents a glass at soda
fountains, which were popular in the United States at the time due to the
belief that carbonated water was good for the health.
I also applied a stencil of a sun in the lid and some text in red color in different parts of the box.
This decoupage project was made using the wonderful and versatile
ModPodge. The materials you need are:
Materials:
- Cardboard box or container that you want to use
- Cuts of Vintage Coca cola advertisements, old cameras and ephemeras
- Acrylic paint in black and red colors or any other color that will suit your design
- Mod Podge
- Stencil of a sun *optional
- Alphabet Stamps (acrylic or wooden)
- Buttons for the front of the lid *optional
- Spray Fixative
This is how
the box looked before. It was a simple cardboard box containing a cd and
other computer software, same type I used in one of our previous projects, the Vintage Classifieds Memory Box:
Step by Step:
1. Prepare the surface. If the box is been
previously used and it has glued paper, remove it completely. If the box
is brand new, leave it as it is, it does not require further preparation. For
this particular box, I cut a piece of the lid, to make it shorter.
2. Paint the whole box with the black acrylic paint,
as it is cardboard it will dry quickly.
3. Use the stencil to draw the sun in different areas
of the box using the red acrylic, and also use the alphabet stamps to write words
like “tasty” “enjoy”, etc.
4. Print the advertisements and other images and spray
them with a fixative if necessary, to prevent the ink from running. Let
it dry and plan their distribution on the box. Then cut and keep.
5. Glue the images on to the box with ModPodge, at the
moment apply it on the back of the images (not the front). Once all the
cuts are glued and dried in the outside then proceed with the inside of the
box.
6. As decorative touch, add two buttons on the front of the lid or
any other embellishment you would like to add.
7. Once all is dry give the whole box 2 layers of ModPodge to seal
it and protect it. And then viola! the job is done.
Here it is my friend Marcia looking happy with her coca cola lover box. She is currently using it as a jewelry box.
Coca Cola is definitely my favorite drink, what is it yours?

What a great idea. Your box looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Ali x
ReplyDeleteGrowing up in the late 50's and early 60's, my father owned the local soda fountain. Coca Cola syrup came in large bottles to mix with carbonated water at the fountain. You could order with extra syrup, cherry syrup, and he even made chocolate ones! Your beautiful box brings back memories!

ReplyDeletePS - now following you on Facebook!
Gorgeous box!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous as are all your box transformations. You certainly have an eye for composing images. We have come a long way haven't we regarding Coke? From a "good for your health" perspective to how harmful it is with caffeine and especially the 8tsps of sugar in a can! I am not judging you, just funny I thought about old beliefs.
