We recently bought a small and cute wooden chopping board at a local
dollar store and I thought the perfect way to decorate it was with the method
of image transfer. As a chopping board is
a kitchen/restaurant utensil, I chose the antique graphics in the same related theme and
here it is the finished project:
The graphics are from one my favorite books of Dover Publications about “Old
Advertisement Cuts” which I love very much.
I simulated a stripped awning of a French café by painting it with acrylic
paints in red and white colors; and transferred the “Beurres & Fromages” (Butter
and Chesse) vintage sign on top.
The transfer was done very easy in 24 hours with the wonderful Mod Podge.
The materials for this project are:
Materials:
- Wooden chopping board or any other wood surface you want to work with
- Brush, sanding paper & pencil
- Liquid Gesso
- Acrylic Paints: White, cream white and red
- Mirror prints of the selected graphics to be transferred
- Mod Podge
- Container with water and a cloth
Step by Step:
1. Prepare the surface. Sand it softly and give 1-2 coats of
liquid gesso. Once the liquid gesso is
dry, sand it softly again to get a smooth surface.
2. Paint 1-2 coats of the cream white acrylic paint to
the whole surface.
3. Draw with the pencil the stripes of the café awning and paint them with
white & red acrylics.
4. Print or photocopy the graphics in mirror image on regular bond
paper. Mines were printed directly from
a HP laser (toner base) black and white printer and worked out very good.
5. Cut the paper as close to the edge
of the graphic as possible, so once the transfer is done, you have less paper
to remove around the edges. Add the Mod
Podge to the front of the image or graphic, where the ink is printed and glue
them to the area where you want the transfer to be done. Remove any bubbles and let it dry completely
for 24 hours; do not touch it in between.
6. Wet your fingers deeply in water
and pass them on top of the glued graphics, the paper will get wet and you will
be able to remove it little by little leaving behind only the ink that has been
transferred. Do it very softly, with care
and lot of patient and remove the excess of water with a cloth. You may have to repeat this process 3-4 times
until you feel there is no more paper left and only the transferred ink remains.
7. Once all the paper is fully removed from the surface, let it dry and
apply 2 coats of Mod Podge in the entire project to preserve it and protect it;
and viola!! your beautiful transfer is finished. Note:
This wooden chopping board is for decorative purposes only; it should not be
used in the kitchen as a real utensil.
This project is very easy to do and in just few steps you get to
make a simple but yet very cute decorations for your kitchen in the antique looking
style. Hang it on the wall or keep it as
a decorative element on top of a shelf.
