When it comes to vintage images & graphics my favorites to collect are the old Advertisements, Classifieds and commercial art. We have many in the workshop and we keep collecting more and more especially in digital formats, when we don't get access to the real newspapers. I really find them very charming and unique.
Then one day I was going through my collection and wondering, what would it be a nice way to keep a collection always visible? and my answer was a memory box decorated entirely with vintage commercial art. Here it is:
It is a sort of a collage of old advertisements in all the box, the inside as well as the outside of the box.
I chose the most colorful advertisements I could find to enhance the box and printed them with the "vivid" option of my canon printer.
On the inside of the box, the bottom was painted in brown acrylic color and one vintage stamp was stamped on it.
Then for the embellishments some ribbon, a french coin, old buttons and a small frame.
We added the word "Vintage" with alphabet stencil on the lid.
This
decoupage project was made using the wonderful and versatile ModPodge. The materials you need are:
Materials:
- Cardboard box or container that you want to use
- Cuts of Vintage advertisements, classifieds or commercial art
- Acrylic paint in brown color or any other color that will suit your design
- ModPodge
- Rubber or clear stamps & ink (*optional)
- Ribbons, buttons, coins (*optional)
- Fixative spray for photos or prints
- Alphabet Stencils
This is how the box looked before. It was a simple cardboard box containing a cd and other computer software:
Step by Step:
1. Prepare the
surface. If the box has been previously used and it has glued paper, remove it
completely. If the box is brand new, leave it as it is, it does not require further preparation or painting because we are covering it all with paper. For this particular box, I cut a piece of the lid, to make it shorter.
2. Cut the advertisements and spray them with a fixative if necessary, to prevent the ink from running. Let it dry and plan their distribution on the box.
3. Glue the images on to the box with ModPodge, at the moment apply it on the back of the images (not the front). Once all the cuts are glued outside (top, below and sides), proceed with the inside of the box.
4. Paint the bottom of the box with the acrylic color and once dry apply the stamp with your favorite vintage image on it.
5. Paint the lid with the word Vintage and for an aged look, paint around the edges of the box a border with the same brown color. Let it dry.
6. Once all is dry give the whole box 2 layers of ModPodge to seal it and protect it.
7. Add some ribbons, buttons, coins or other embellisments according to the design and voilà! the job is done.
Now the vintage advertisements, classifieds and commercial art are not only on a cd but also displayed nicely in a colorful memory box that we can enjoy looking at. I hope you like this project and would try it at home it's very easy, I certainly enjoyed working on it.
