Victorian Fashion Trends
When it comes to Fashion, I am a big fan of the Victorian Era, I
consider those women dresses just amazingly beautiful, elegant and charming, and I
found one website with interesting information about the 19th Century Fashion that not everybody knows about like, for example that women of that era were much like
us women of today, always looking for the newest fashion at an affordable price
or the fact that corsets affected women’s health seriously. However, I still find that fashion style very
nice.
Having the Victorian era in my mind and inspired by my collection of Victorian
Fashion & accessories from Dover Publication books, I decided to renovate
and decorate one old cardboard perfume box I had forgotten in my closet. Here it is the final result:
The box was in poor condition, but with a color striped background and prints
of fashion elements, it came back to life.
The colors of the background enhance the black & white prints.
Some images were glued as well in the front of the box.
The background for the inside of the lid was kept in plain brown.
This is the “before” of this box.
This decoupage project was made using the wonderful and versatile
Mod Podge. The materials you need are:
Materials:
- Cardboard box or container that you want to use
- Cuts of Victorian Fashion or any other fashion era of your preference
- Acrylic paints
- Liquid Gesso
- Mod Podge
- Rubber or clear stamps & ink
- Spray Fixative
Step by Step:
1. Prepare the surface. If the box is been
previously used and it is in poor conditions like mine, apply one coat of
liquid gesso to make it stronger and cover the imperfections. If the box
is brand new, just sand slightly the surface with a very soft sanding paper,
for the paint to adhere better.
2. Cut the fashion prints and spray them with a
fixative if necessary, to prevent the ink from running. Let it dry and
plan their distribution on the box.
3. Paint the
entire box in the colors of your preference.
For this project I painted the lid with different colors, the inside of
the box with an “antique rose” color, and the rest of the box in light brown color. Let the box dry.
4. Glue the images on to the box with Mod Podge, at the
moment apply it on the back of the images (not the front). Let them dry
properly.
5. Then, add some decorative elements with vintage
stamps. I used buttons, letters and ornaments.
6. Paint with black acrylic a border around the box to make it look old.
7. Once all is dry give the whole
box 2 layers of Mod Podge to seal it and protect it and voilĂ ! the job is done.
It turned into a beautiful Victorian container for jewelry, make up or any
fashion accessories.
